2013 Riesling
Accolades
(4½ Stars) Pisa Range Estate Pisa Central Otago Riesling 2013 - Michael Cooper, Winestate, June 2014
Floral, citrusy bouquet. Full-bodied, bone-dry style (2 grams/litre residual sugar), very crisp and lively, with tightly structured, intense, grapefruit-like flavours, pure, slightly spicy and lingering. Full of youthful drive and thrust, but not austere, it’s approachable now and should mature gracefully. $28 (A, USA)
(4 Stars) Pisa Range Estate Pisa Central Otago Riesling 2013 Raymond Chan - www.raymondchanwinereviews.co.nz - May 2014
The second release of a Pisa Range Estate Riesling, fruit from the flat block, cool-fermented to 12.0% alc. and 2 g/L RS. Brilliant straw-yellow colour, lighter on rim. The nose is very fine and delicately presented with tightly bound aromas of pure lime fruit with subtle white florals, and mouth-watering minerally notes. Dry to taste and medium-light bodied, the fruit flavours of limes, mineral-infused citrus fruits, wet stones and florals are very intensely concentrated. The mouthfeel features good fruit extract with a fine-textured, firm, grainy line. Brisk but soft acidity contributes to the dryness on palate, and the flavours are carried to a very long, lingering, thirst-quenching finish. This is an elegant and tightly concentrated dry Riesling with intensity and textured linearity. Serve as an aperitif and with seafood over the next 5-6 years. 18.0+/20 May 2014 RRP $28.00
Vineyard
The remarkable snow capped Pisa Range landscape with glittering rivers (this was gold rush territory in the 1800s) produces very distinctive wines.
Grown at Pisa – a warm district of the Cromwell Basin, careful management of the vines kept crop levels low producing good quality small-berried fruit. The 2013 season was very typical for Central Otago with a long dry autumn allowing slow ripening - with the fruit going into the winery in excellent condition. Hand harvested on 22 April 2013 and bottled March 2014.
