A new label from younger vines. Perhaps lacking the weight and concentration of the Black Poplar Block label but with appealing suppleness and elegance plus an almost etheral texture. A tight-knit wine that's long and linear. (Drink now - 9 years).
A highly satisfying wine, the attractive bouquet shows fragrant aromas of red/black cherry, truffle, floral and cedar. It’s succulent and rounded on the palate with lovely mid palate weight and silky texture, finishing long and smooth. A real charmer. At its best: now to 2016.
‘Run 245’ was the pastural tenure number given to this Central Otago land in 1866. Since that time it has rewarded those who have walked it - now producing very distinctive wines. This is the first wine under the ‘Run 245’ label crafted from a blend of the younger Dijon clones. Hand harvested this wine has matured in oak for one year.
The 2011 vintage started with a warm spring, followed by a cooler wetter mid-season. Good open canopy management was required to reduce disease risk. The season ended with a lovely long autumn producing excellent fruit. As is our practice, the grapes were hand harvested clone by clone on 14 April 2011. The wine has matured in French oak barriques for one year. Bottling took place in May 2012. Minimal intervention is practiced both in the vineyard and in the winery to allow this wine to express its 'sense of place'.

]]>(4½ Stars) Pisa Range Estate Pisa Central Otago Riesling 2013 - Michael Cooper, Winestate, June 2014
Floral, citrusy bouquet. Full-bodied, bone-dry style (2 grams/litre residual sugar), very crisp and lively, with tightly structured, intense, grapefruit-like flavours, pure, slightly spicy and lingering. Full of youthful drive and thrust, but not austere, it’s approachable now and should mature gracefully. $28 (A, USA)
(4 Stars) Pisa Range Estate Pisa Central Otago Riesling 2013 Raymond Chan - www.raymondchanwinereviews.co.nz - May 2014
The second release of a Pisa Range Estate Riesling, fruit from the flat block, cool-fermented to 12.0% alc. and 2 g/L RS. Brilliant straw-yellow colour, lighter on rim. The nose is very fine and delicately presented with tightly bound aromas of pure lime fruit with subtle white florals, and mouth-watering minerally notes. Dry to taste and medium-light bodied, the fruit flavours of limes, mineral-infused citrus fruits, wet stones and florals are very intensely concentrated. The mouthfeel features good fruit extract with a fine-textured, firm, grainy line. Brisk but soft acidity contributes to the dryness on palate, and the flavours are carried to a very long, lingering, thirst-quenching finish. This is an elegant and tightly concentrated dry Riesling with intensity and textured linearity. Serve as an aperitif and with seafood over the next 5-6 years. 18.0+/20 May 2014 RRP $28.00

Pisa Range Estate Black Poplar Block Pinot Noir 2013 (Central Otago) Very dark, deep purple-hued black-red colour, a little lighter on rim. The nose is elegantly proportioned with fragrant and pure aromas of ripe black cherry and blackberry fruits along with black mineral notes. The aromatics are intense and penetrating revealing fine violet and black florals, spice nuances, subtle thyme herb hints, and raspberry liqueur with aeration. Medium-bodied and refined in proportion, beautifully vibrant and succulent dark raspberry and black cherry fruit flavours are the feature on palate.
The fruit sweetness is enhanced by fresh, lacy acidity, lending the mouthfeel vitality and fine-grained powdery tannins support the fruit lending depth and linearity. Minerally elements, some oak and a suggestion of reduction adds to the complex detailing, and the wine carries to a tightly bound, long, lingering finish.
This is an elegant and vibrant Pinot Noir with intense black and red fruits and a finely concentrated palate. Serve with duck, pork, lamb and beef over the next 6-8 years.
Fruit from the ‘Black Poplar’ block from vines planted in 1995, hand-picked and fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged one year in one-third new French oak barriques.
(5 Stars) Sam Harrop MW - Italian Issue Cuisine - Pinot Noir Tasting May 15 Pisa Range Estate Black Poplar Block Pinot Noir 2013 (Central Otago)
This pinot is made from the oldest vines of a favoured site at Pisa, on the western side of Lake Dunstan. Ink-dark in the glass, it is ripe and powerful, but not at the expense of elegance and freshness. “That ripeness and vitality brings to mind a modern Vosne-Romanée, Burgundy,” said Sam Harrop MW.
The ‘Black Poplar Block’ is a four hectare planting. It takes its name from the two majestic 100 year old Black Poplar trees that dominate this area of the vineyard. This wine is crafted from our older vines planted in 1995.
The 2013 vintage followed a very cold winter. Good weather in November allowed for a good and even flower set. However, December/early January were unsettled, with brief cool fronts bringing dustings of snow to the Pisa Range.
By mid January the weather settled giving warm, consistent temperatures - which continued for the remainder of the summer. As is our practice, the grapes were hand harvested clone by clone on 10th April 2013. The wine has matured in French oak barriques (one third new) for one year. Bottling took place in February 2014. Minimal intervention is practiced both in the vineyard and in the winery.

This wine is crafted from our older vines planted in 1995. The 2015 growing season started with a cool spring with a series of frosts and slow growth in the vineyard. A short flowering in December resulting in an average and uniform cropload. Settled and warm weather through January led to healthy and even ripening. Occasional rainfall in February ensured steady growth while having minimal disease pressure. Ripening then progressed as normal with berries reaching optimal flavours/ concentration and harvest in late March. While 2015 had its challenges, the great condition and concentration of the fruit harvested made it possible to make a wine that clearly expresses its site or Terrior. The wine has matured in French oak barriques (one third new) for nine months then bottled in early 2016. To maintain site expression in the wine minimal intervention is practiced both in the vineyard and in the winery.
